Client, Role & Challenges

The Client — Elan Valley Gin, Rhayader, Wales |
Waters Creative, Swansea, UK | 2020
Waters Creative tasked me with designing an elegant bottle label and presentation box for Elan Valley Distillery. This high-end, bespoke product is tailored for gin connoisseurs and botanical flavour enthusiasts, capturing the sophistication and artistry of the distillery’s exceptional offerings.

Project Goals & Challenges
Creating a visual identity for Elan Valley Gin involves capturing the valley's natural beauty and heritage while standing out in a competitive market. The design must blend tradition and modernity, reflecting the gin's craftsmanship and quality. It should tell the valley's story using unique elements appealing to classic and modern gin drinkers. The identity must work across various platforms and be flexible for future growth, staying fresh and timeless as the brand evolves.

The Team — Ben Ballantyne, Creative Designer | Rachael Whitley, Founder of Waters Creative
My role was to create a unique visual identity that highlights the brand’s premium quality and heritage. This involved designing the bottle label, packaging, and logo with attractive typography and colours to appeal to gin enthusiasts. The goal is establishing a distinctive and cohesive brand in a competitive market.

Art Direction
I set out to create a high-end and sophisticated design and incorporate the heritage of Elan Valley into the branding. The brand identity and packaging should be unique, custom-designed, and reflects the bespoke nature of the distillery. Rather than create a botanical style, I decided to go for the abstract nature of the Elan Valley as a botanical flavour theme design would limit the brand concept for Elan Valley Gin. I looked at the unique rock formations and used them to create an abstract shape of the infamous river dam.

User Touchpoints
I further expanded on the brand identity by creating labels, cards, and a gift bag that feels bespoke for gin lovers. These items would be suitable for customers who would like to buy Elan Valley Gin as a gift for a person on a special occasion. I also made labels and card designs that are bespoke to the consumer for those special occasions.
